A Dangerous Jetty Made Safe

How hard is it to get something removed that is dangerous to the public.

A very loose, dangerous piece of metal dangling by a thread.

Back on the 13th of August 2022 a piece of steel was observed to be hanging loosely from the underside of the walkway of the iconic Catho Jetty. It took numerous calls to try and find some help, and immediate action, as to make it safe for people who would walk under the jetty, without the chance of this steel coming down and injuring someone.

Beaches Action Group (BAG) contacted developers and local Councilors (all who now want the jetty preserved in the DMP for LMCC) to get some help in making the situation safer. However all denied ownership and as they were not responsible for it there was nothing they were prepared to do to make the area safer for the public.

Local MP Yasmin Cately's office was also contacted and after listening to BAGs concerns, we were advised that the office would contact the government department responsible. Eventually a contact with the Crown Lands Department was made on a Friday and arrangements were started to make it safer. BAG liaised with their contractor on Friday and pointed out the problem and it was arranged to have it fixed the following Monday. BAG met with them at the jetty on Monday and it was sorted out in a timely manner.

A good safe outcome for the community and visitors to the area was achieved.
