Backburning/Hazard Reduction Beaches Estate

Report from Ranger Stacey Wilson

Hi Burt,

Beaches HR – hazard reduction burn currently being prepared is scheduled for 2023/24 in Spring.  I also know that RFS have assessed the estate and is working with Council to ensure that APZ (asset protection zones) / gardens and vegetation strips are maintained as fire breaks, which may be another reason Council were out mowing on Wednesday.

With respect to our meeting on Wednesday – I have discussed with Andrew (Team Leader Ranger) and Steve (Area Manager) and they have both confirmed that with respect to the Moonee Beach walking track, it was discussed between NPWS and residents, to either widen the walking track or put in passing bays.  As the track is now being widened passing bays and or handrail will not be considered at this stage. We will see how the widening goes and move focus to working on access via Hooey Street as discussed as the priority.

I will work with staff to install a sandstone block at the top of the track as a resting place for people, and also to increase / improve weed management in the area as well as look at the trip hazards at the top of the stairs and the tidy up the bollard with the splinters on it.

I will also seek advice and determine if Surf Life Saving Australia are able to assist with or interested in installing the emergency call point as they are the ones that approached NPWS about the one at Snapper Point.  I will follow up on the ongoing maintenance costs and see if this is something that can be added to the emergency response plans.

Also, as mentioned Andrew and I are happy to attend an Alliance meeting to meet everyone and discuss plans and questions as we move forward into the future.

Kind regards
