Before Beaches

Back Before Beaches Estate

Another interesting bit of history of Moonee Beach. The northern end near creek (see just left of center in 1st photo) in the days of Wallarah Colliery this area was called Slaughter Paddock (see center of 2nd photo) and used as a watering hole for the pit ponies (photo 3) and gets it's unusual name because the early town butchers slaughtered their beasts for their local retail outlets there. Later after the Colliery days it was used for mineral sand mining in the 1950s and a free camping spot in the 1970s.
